Journalists were "shocked and traumatized by the atrocities of 9/11, of people hurling themselves out of 50-story windows in the World Trade Center," PBS newsman Bill Moyers says. "Their natural response was to rally around the troops, make sure the commander-in-chief got the perpetrators."

But that led most news organizations to "suspend their skepticism" of an administration bent on war in Iraq, he says, and that contributed to the "great blunder."

"Vietnam cost more lives so far, but Iraq has probably had a greater, longer traumatic effect on world events," he says.

Moyers, 72, examines the media's shortcomings in "Buying the War," a 90-minute Bill Moyers Journal special Wednesday (9 ET/PT, PBS). Among those interviewed: former CBS News anchor Dan Rather, 60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon and The Washington Post's Walter Pincus.

The media-White House dance is familiar to Moyers, who once spun the Vietnam War as a special assistant to President Johnson. "We circled the wagons. We didn't want to listen to the (CBS') Morley Safers and (the Associated Press') Peter Arnetts and (The New York Times') David Halberstams reporting on the ground. There's a tendency in Washington government to deal with your own view of the world without being contradicted by mischief-making journalists."

But during the buildup to Iraq, he says, very few journalists made mischief, and those who questioned the administration's motives were largely ignored.

Since his days in Washington power circles, Moyers says, the "symbiotic relationship between the political elites and media elites has grown. When media elites are aggressive in their interrogation of public officials, they are demonized and vilified by the president's party and cheerleaders."

And now that most media outlets are owned by corporations "with vested interests in Washington policy, it makes it hard on journalists to blow the whistle in Washington because it reverberates upstairs to the guys with their lobbyists who are trying to solicit favors from the government."

Moyer says the Bush administration was aided by vocal talk-show hosts and an organized network of bloggers. But he notes that the Times and the Post also bolstered claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction in front-page pieces from mid-2002 to March 2003, when the U.S. military invaded Iraq. They had a huge effect on other news organizations.

"The New York Times is often the inspiration for much if not most of what winds up on the evening newscasts," Moyers says. "For media elites in broadcasting, the Times still drives their agenda."

A series of pieces by Times reporter Judith Miller making the case for war got huge media pickup, while stories by Knight Ridder reporters Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel were virtually ignored. "There was a lot of skepticism among our editors because what we were writing was so at odds with what most of the rest of the Washington press corps was reporting," Strobel tells Moyers.

In some ways, Moyers says, the firestorm over how much play NBC News should give video excerpts left by the Virginia Tech killer is emblematic of how controversies are discussed these days.

"All these opinions and clashing analysis about whether NBC should have aired it, instead of a debate and discussion about the sociopaths in our midst. What do we do about violence? You get a lot of distractions. You get the noise of the debate without the issues."

the truth, inevitably, rises to the top... people admit mistakes, and change is afoot. blessings on the children and blessings on our country as we face the atrocities we have ***all*** been co-conspirators with...all of us. admitting the problem is the first step towards healing and forgiveness.

How could we have become such a nation of sheep? Is it time to take our country back?

For me, the most disturbing part was the phony press conference where the reporters had pre approved questions and Shrub had a list had a list of reporters to call on. Sounds like something out of "1984". I now realize that if the Theocons/ Dominionists ever do take over in this country, the majority of the press will cheer and welcome the fascist state.

Four years ago on May 1, President Bush landed on the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln wearing a flight suit and delivered a speech in front of a giant "Mission Accomplished" banner. He was hailed by media stars as a "breathtaking" example of presidential leadership in toppling Saddam Hussein. Despite profound questions over the failure to locate weapons of mass destruction and the increasing violence in Baghdad, many in the press confirmed the White House's claim that the war was won. MSNBC's Chris Matthews declared, "We're all neo-cons now;" NPR's Bob Edwards said, "The war in Iraq is essentially over;" and Fortune magazine's Jeff Birnbaum said, "It is amazing how thorough the victory in Iraq really was in the broadest context."

How did the mainstream press get it so wrong? How did the evidence disputing the existence of weapons of mass destruction and the link between Saddam Hussein to 9-11 continue to go largely unreported? "What the conservative media did was easy to fathom; they had been cheerleaders for the White House from the beginning and were simply continuing to rally the public behind the President — no questions asked. How mainstream journalists suspended skepticism and scrutiny remains an issue of significance that the media has not satisfactorily explored," says Moyers. "How the administration marketed the war to the American people has been well covered, but critical questions remain: How and why did the press buy it, and what does it say about the role of journalists in helping the public sort out fact from propaganda?"

On Wednesday, April 25 at 9 p.m. on PBS, a new PBS series BILL MOYERS JOURNAL premieres at a special time with "Buying the War," a 90-minute documentary that explores the role of the press in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. Two days later on April 27, BILL MOYERS JOURNAL airs in its regular timeslot on Fridays at 9 p.m. with interviews and news analysis on a wide range of subjects, including politics, arts and culture, the media, the economy, and issues facing democracy. "Buying the War" includes interviews with Dan Rather, formerly of CBS; Tim Russert of MEET THE PRESS; Bob Simon of 60 MINUTES; Walter Isaacson, former president of CNN; and John Walcott, Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel of Knight Ridder newspapers, which was acquired by The McClatchy Company in 2006.

In "Buying the War" Bill Moyers and producer Kathleen Hughes document the reporting of Walcott, Landay and Strobel, the Knight Ridder team that burrowed deep into the intelligence agencies to try and determine whether there was any evidence for the Bush Administration's case for war. "Many of the things that were said about Iraq didn't make sense," says Walcott. "And that really prompts you to ask, 'Wait a minute. Is this true? Does everyone agree that this is true? Does anyone think this is not true?'"

In the run-up to war, skepticism was a rarity among journalists inside the Beltway. Journalist Bob Simon of 60 Minutes, who was based in the Middle East, questioned the reporting he was seeing and reading. "I mean we knew things or suspected things that perhaps the Washington press corps could not suspect. For example, the absurdity of putting up a connection between Saddam Hussein and Al Qaeda," he tells Moyers. "Saddam…was a total control freak. To introduce a wild card like Al Qaeda in any sense was just something he would not do. So I just didn't believe it for an instant." The program analyzes the stream of unchecked information from administration sources and Iraqi defectors to the mainstream print and broadcast press, which was then seized upon and amplified by an army of pundits. While almost all the claims would eventually prove to be false, the drumbeat of misinformation about WMDs went virtually unchallenged by the media. THE NEW YORK TIMES reported on Iraq's "worldwide hunt for materials to make an atomic bomb," but according to Landay, claims by the administration about the possibility of nuclear weapons were highly questionable. Yet, his story citing the "lack of hard evidence of Iraqi weapons" got little play. In fact, throughout the media landscape, stories challenging the official view were often pushed aside while the administration's claims were given prominence. "From August 2002 until the war was launched in March of 2003 there were about 140 front page pieces in THE WASHINGTON POST making the administration's case for war," says Howard Kurtz, the POST's media critic. "But there was only a handful of stories that ran on the front page that made the opposite case. Or, if not making the opposite case, raised questions."

"Buying the War" examines the press coverage in the lead-up to the war as evidence of a paradigm shift in the role of journalists in democracy and asks, four years after the invasion, what's changed? "More and more the media become, I think, common carriers of administration statements and critics of the administration," says THE WASHINGTON POST's Walter Pincus. "We've sort of given up being independent on our own."

The Cost of War
By Bill Moyers             Friday 11 May 2007             TRANSCRIPT:

Finally, at the beginning of its fifth year, let's take a look at the cost of this war.

Bob Woodruff (ABC): "It was an impressive sight from the deck of the Abraham Lincoln, this war time president soaring overhead."

Cynthia Bowers (CBS): "The White House has sent a clear signal. It is pulling out all the stops, choreographing this finale to the War."

Bill Moyers: Yes, the war was over, the winner was George W. Bush, hailed by the press as a conquering hero.

Chris Matthews (Hardball): "He won the war, he was an effective commander, everybody recognizes that, I believe, except a few critics."

Lou Dobbs (CNN): "He looked like alternately Commander in Chief, rock star, movie star and one of the guys."

Tom Brokaw (NBC): "Here, now, is the President of the United States as he walks across the deck with 2000 sailors and officers on board for his address to the nation on the recently completed war in Iraq."

President George W. Bush: "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended. In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed."

Bill Moyers: By this point - 140 U.S. troops had died during the mission.

But back in Iraq, reality was writing the script.

Every day since that choreographed victory lap, violent act has followed violent act.

This April was the cruelest month of the year. The deadliest so far.

Even the supposedly protected heart of American power in Baghdad, The Green Zone, was shattered by an al Qaeda attack. Al Qaeda was not a presence in Iraq before the mission but it has a firm foothold there now.

Entering its fifth year, the war's costs are soaring so fast the Web site costofwar.com uses a non-stop digital counter to keep up with the spending. In today's dollars, it's projected to become the most expensive war in recent history - reaching nearly one-trillion dollars.

According to the National Priorities Project, the money spent on the war so far could have provided America:

·         1.8 million new teachers.

·         Over 20 million college scholarships.

·         Health insurance for over 60 million children.

·         Or nearly 4 million new housing units.

But no price tag can be put on the lost human lives.

Our government hasn't wanted us to see the human cost of the war.

It took grieving families and friends and veterans to create their own memorials like this one - crosses all in a row - on a California beach.

    The grieving continues online:

Mother (Sitting Near Headstone): He was my only child. This is something he gave me when he was 12 years old for Valentine's Day.

Sister: He wasn't just my brother. He was our father's best friend, he was our mother's baby boy.

Sister: My brother was a loving guy. A great brother, a great son, a great dad.

Mother: My angel was given to me on October 7, 1980. And he remains my angel to this day.

Bill Moyers: The number of soldiers killed has reached 3,372 this week.

Medic: We'll just got some oxygen on you, okay?

Bill Moyers: The number wounded - over 25,000 - And the number of limbs blown off and amputated - 1500 so far. And over five thousand head and brain injuries.

And we can never reckon the unseen scars that last a lifetime.

Sgt. Ty Ziegel suffered the loss of an eye, a fractured skull and burns over much of his body from the attack of a suicide bomber. Over 30 operations later he returned to civilian life and married his high school sweetheart, Renee.

As he gets on with his life, his unit is going back for a third tour of duty - including his 21-year-old brother Zach.

As for Iraqis, it's been difficult to get an accurate count of the dead and wounded.

Estimates range up to three-quarters of a million killed.

Caught in the cross-fire between Sunnis and Shiites, hunted down by death squads or cut down on their way to school work or the market, many just disappear into the debris.

Some two million have fled the country running for their lives.

Try to imagine what it's like to live with this.

Try to imagine what it's like to live in this.

Even when we catch a glimpse of their blackened bodies.

Even when their stricken eyes stare back.

They remain nameless to us - collateral damage - gone in a flash.

Forty years ago, we escalated the war in Vietnam again and again despite the absence of a winning strategy.

    We're doing it again.

President George W. Bush: America will change our strategy to help the Iraqis carry out their campaign to put down sectarian violence - and bring security to the people of Baghdad. This will require increasing American force levels. So I have committed more than 20,000 additional American troops to Iraq.

Bill Moyers: The President is also calling up an additional 13,000 National Guardsmen next year despite the hardships on their families, communities and jobs. Nor will they be available during that time for emergency duty here at home. And the army has extended the tour of troops in Iraq to 15 months.

As Democrats and Republicans in Washington wrangle over a strategy, there is speculation that no matter what agreement they reach ... American troops will be in Iraq at least a decade to come.

We are not finished with the costs of this war.

We'll be back next week. I'm Bill Moyers.

Bill Moyers’ “Buying the War”
Exposes the Media’s Failure to do Their Job.

by Joanne Ostrow

In some quarters, this week is set aside as “turn off your TV week. ”Beyond the fact that it’s a silly enterprise - Pick and choose, people! Pick and choose! - there is one important offering on the nonfiction front that should not be missed.

If we could retroactively pull the plug, say during the saturation coverage of the Anna Nicole Smith saga, that might have been a good week to skip the tube.

But - do-gooders take note - this week a devastating 90-minute documentary should be required viewing. This is the kind of work television can do brilliantly when given time and resources and the talents of a questioner like Bill Moyers.

A point-by-point explanation of how the media failed the public en route to the war in Iraq is carefully assembled and patiently related Wednesday by Moyers on PBS.

“Bill Moyers Journal,” at 8 p.m. Wednesday on KRMA-Channel 6, presents “Buying the War,” an eye-opening view of how the mainstream press got things exactly wrong in the ramp-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq. (local listings here)

The passing of unchecked information, the fear of appearing unpatriotic in the wake of 9/11, the readiness to join the drumbeat of misinformation about weapons of mass destruction and the willingness of the rest of the media to follow The New York Times - all contributed to the media buying in and failing to help readers and viewers separate fact from propaganda.

Dan Rather, formerly of CBS, tells Moyers, “I don’t think there is any excuse for my performance and the performance of the press in general in the roll-up to the war. Overall … there’s no question that we didn’t do a good job.”

Tim Russert of NBC’s “Meet the Press” has a tougher time admitting complicity, or allowing that his influential program was used by the administration. Russert says he simply followed the lead of the front-page story of The New York Times. Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice went on the Sunday-morning shows and cited the infamous “smoking gun as mushroom cloud” story, which they gave the Times.

Bob Simon of CBS’s “60 Minutes” sums up that performance: “Remarkable. You leak a story, and then you quote the story.”

As in so many phases of the administration’s marketing of the war, the media simply stood by.

Walter Isaacson, former president of CNN, says, “Especially right after 9/11. Especially when the war in Afghanistan is going on. There was a real sense that you don’t get that critical of a government that’s leading us in war time.”

A particularly embarrassing news conference with President Bush two weeks before he ordered the country to war demonstrates the passive state of the press at the time.

“At least a dozen times during this press conference he will invoke 9/11 and Al-Qaeda to justify a pre-emptive attack on a country that has not attacked America,” Moyers narrates.

The president calls on reporters designated by his staff. The questions are friendly to the point of puffy. The press corps wouldn’t awaken until after Hurricane Katrina. They knew the war was going to happen, so they got out of the way.

The work of an investigative team from Knight Ridder newspapers (acquired by The McClatchy Co. last year) is singled out as a rare example of healthy, skeptical reporting. Yet while almost all the Bush claims about WMD would prove to be false, the story citing “lack of hard evidence of Iraqi weapons” got little play.

Among the cheerleaders for the war who refused to talk to Moyers for this report are (no surprises here) columnist Thomas Friedman of The New York Times, conservative pundit William Kristol of The Weekly Standard, president of Fox News and former Nixon and Reagan strategist Roger Ailes, Washington Post columnist and Fox news commentator Charles Krauthammer, New York Times reporter Judith Miller, and Times political columnist William Safire.

It’s easy to campaign in favor of turning off the television. The bumper sticker “Kill your TV” is ever popular. But if more of us were better informed, as this documentary makes painfully clear, the world outside the box would be a better place.

Members of the media will be parsing this historic lapse for years to come, trying to explain how the watchdogs dozed.

Journalism students everywhere should watch and take notes.

Step out of your immediate concern for yourself, your family, your money, home, job, profit,.  Consider the future of us all.

Divided we fall, only united can we stand against the incredible tyrannical and powerful military - industrial - media conglomerate.

FBI Knowingly Allowed Bin Laden To Personally Charter Flight After 9/11

Steve Watson  Prison Planet    Thursday, June 21, 2007
Newly released documents prove agency let Osama's family go at his request without even questioning them

The FBI were aware that Osama Bin Laden may have chartered one of the flights that took Bin Laden family members out of the U.S. in the days after the 9/11 attacks, yet allowed the planes to depart without even questioning them, new Agency documents reveal.

While all other air traffic had been grounded for days by the authorities they knowingly allowed the immediate family of their prime suspect behind the attacks to get into planes and fly out at Bin Laden's own request.

The previously confidential documents (PDF link) have been obtained by Judicial Watch through the Freedom of Information Act and ongoing litigation.

The documents state:

ON 9/19/01, A 727 Plane left LAX, ryan Flt #441 to Orlando, FL w/ETA (estimated time of arrival) of 4-5 pm. The plane was chartered either by the Saudi Arabian royal family or Osama bin Laden…the LA FBI searched the plane [redacted] luggage, of which nothing unusual was found.

Traffic control reports show that the plane made four stops to pick up passengers and was then allowed to depart the United States for Paris where all passengers disembarked on 9/20/01.

The documents reveal that the FBI did not consider a single Saudi national nor any of the Bin Laden family worthy of investigative value.

Furthermore, Judicial Watch's examination of the documents has revealed that they contain numerous errors and inconsistencies which show the FBI’s investigation of the Saudi flights to be woefully inadequate and almost non existent.

For example, in one document, the FBI claims to have interviewed 20 of 23 passengers on the Ryan International Airlines flight (commonly referred to as the “Bin Laden Family Flight”) while a second FBI document claims only to have interviewed 15 of 22 passengers on the same flight.

“Eight days after the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, Osama bin Laden possibly charters a flight to whisk his family out of the country, and it’s not worth more than a luggage search and a few brief interviews?” asked Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “Clearly these documents prove the FBI conducted a slapdash investigation of these Saudi flights. We’ll never know how many investigative leads were lost due to the FBI’s lack of diligence.”

U.S. District Court Judge Richard W. Roberts ordered the FBI to resubmit “proper disclosures” to the Court and Judicial Watch, leading to these incredible findings.

It was revealed that the FBI had previously redacted Osama Bin Laden’s name from the records in order “to protect privacy interests.”

Note the previously blacked out "Osama Bin Laden" - privacy interests? get real.

The documents provide clear proof that the FBI was protecting the Bin Laden while the rest of the world was being told that he had masterminded the biggest terror attack in history. The FBI then attempted to cover up this fact.

An FBI spokesman said the information in the documents is inaccurate.

"There is no new information here. Osama bin Laden did not charter a flight out of the US," FBI special agent Richard Kolko said.

Nothing to see here, move along.

Kolko then cited the 9/11 Commission Report which determined that the FBI did conduct a thorough enough investigation, despite the fact that its own documents contradict each other on basic facts such as how many people were on a plane. Remember also that the same 9/11 Commission report failed to even mention the collapse of building 7, a 47 story skyscraper that wasn't hit by anything on 9/11 and in which many people lost their lives according to witnesses.

Perhaps the FBI allowed Bin Laden to charter the flight and take all his family members out of the USA because they know he is not a suspect. The FBI's most wanted page for Osama bin Laden still does not include an apportion of blame for 9/11 and there has still been no formal indictment of Bin Laden almost six years after 9/11.

The protection of Bin Laden by federal authorities has been ongoing since BEFORE 9/11 when agents were told to 'back off the Bin Laden family' in order to protect business interests that the Bush family had with the Bin Ladens and other Saudi nationals.

The FBI asserts that no one on the planes that left had any terrorist links. yet documents (specifically FBI document 199I WF213589) found back in November 2001 prove this to be a falsehood.

The FBI was on the trail of bin Laden family members living in the US before September 11. A document showed that special agents from the Washington field office were investigating Abdullah, a close relative of Osama, because of his relationship with the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY), a suspected terrorist organisation, it said.

The Times of India reported at the time:

The report, which the BBC claimed was based on a secret FBI document, numbered 199I WF213589 and emanating out of the FBI’s Washington field office, alleged that the cynicism of the American establishment and "connections between the CIA and Saudi Arabia and the Bush men and bin Ladens" may have been the real cause of the deaths of thousands in the World Trade Centre attacks.

The Bin Laden family are business people, they are not as many would have it hardcore fundamentalist muslim extremists that live in caves in Afghanistan. Here is young Osama lounging around a pink Cadillac with his siblings looking very fashionable in the 1970s.

In the 1980s George W Bush made millions on the back of a company financed by Osama Bin Laden's elder brother, Salem. In addition both presidents Bush had lucrative stakes along with the Bin Ladens in The Carlyle Group which has gone on to become one of America's biggest defence contractors.

On the very morning of 9/11 George W. Bush's father was meeting with Osama bin Laden's brother, Shafig Bin Laden, in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Carlyle Group business. The Bin Ladens sold their stake in Carlyle soon after 9/11.

FBI Special agent Robert Wright broke down when testifying that he had been gagged and could not reveal the true extent of what he knew about the Bush-Bin Laden connection and 9/11. His lawyer stepped up and said live on C-Span that "The Bush Family vacations with the Bin Ladens".

The ties run deep and all lead to money, huge amounts of money. This is how the Bushes do business, this is how they have always done business, they own the best enemies money can buy and the latest revelations underscore the fact that an independent and thorough investigation into 9/11 and the Bush Administration's role in it is absolutely imperative.

showing how CIA exhausted research to facts, and discarded lies, yet the Bush administration picked them up, sent them to Blair / England and then reported them as if it was new information to Sell the War to American Public.

Cheney released lies to NY Times, then on national TV quoted his own published lies as if the NY Times endorsed them.  What great deceptions are continuing.  When will you take a part in saving our Republic (not our democracy !)

I’d gladly loan this hour PBS broadcast to any.

Tale after tale of lies, deception from the Whitehouse to sell the war on lies and deception, all proved wrong and the links show they were known lies when they were told to American people and to the Congress.

Why do we accept, permit, forgive all this lying ?

Lindorff spoke here recently with his book, documenting treason and many capital offenses that Bush has committed against us.  When we do not Impeach him, we give liberty to each future President the same liberties, against our constitution and against our laws. Wire taping outside of law, permitting and authorizing torture even on US citizens, forfeit Habeas Corpus, Posse Comitatus , many more

Practices at Gitmo and Ala ??? prison were a copy of each other, same manuals, same sources.

Video of torture was taken to Whitehouse as entertainment, Wayne Madison reports. www.WayneMadsenReport.com/

If you want, I can send you more detail on all these capital offenses, and documentation.

Once you enter this world, the crime and horror are endless and deep - easily seen in public records.

It is not about being right, it is about being open to reality, from alternate sources, to read, think, measure, test.

Your intuition is stronger and more able than 1,000s of lying newspapers.

Find your center, be a part of your country, stop the incredible loss of life, great deception, and war mongering which we have feed and permitted for decades.

See www.AddictedToWar.com  for more of what US military, politics and global corporations are really doing, which they pretend are for moral purposes, democracy, the American Way.  They are not.  They're efforts are for the profit and the control by the few, elite who deceive us.

For decades US & CIA have been killing innocents, toppling democracies, installing dictators, trading guns, money, drugs, resources at cheap prices, stealing from 3rd world nations so global corporations can sell to US and world markets for profits.

"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to
restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to
restrain the government - lest it come to dominate our lives and
interests." -- Patrick Henry

"The Constitution is just a God-damned piece of paper." -- George W. Bush

Bush has desecrated our constitutional rights, discarding Habeas Corpus ( English law since 1200s) - now anyone can be seized from any place, taken to any place, retained, tortured, without council, notification nor ever stating a crime !  Bush commandeered our National Guard to foreign shores - leaving local at risk, to fight his wars for profit. Why do we permit this ? We are at the verge of Martial law, with all powers for controlling food, transportatin, lodging, communications and more give by unconstitutional Presidential Executive Orders to the control of Homeland Security.  This is to a powerful non elected official that few even know, who has total power over every American.  US built and continues to build many detention camps for Americans since the 1980s under Garden Plot & Operation Cable Splicer.

If you have the stomach for it, google FDR Knew of the pending attacks on Pearl Harbor
While FDR told America we would not go to war, he was promising Churchill/ England that he would bring America into the war.

FDR provoked Japan to attach, had full knowledge of their actins, through spies and ambassador, redirected them to hit Pearl Harbor, sent Red Cross to Pearl in advance of attach, moved most valuable ships form the harbor, reduced the protection and umbrella of sentries, and knew full well of the time of the attach from broken Japanese codes.  The Barnes Review has extensive article showing the actual correspondences and captured letters.  FIOA – Freedom of Information Requests - what opposite stories lie hidden in pages of history.
